Finca Agroloja

/Behind the story/

Finca Agroloja is located in the province of Loja, in the sub-region of Malacatos. The altitude varies between 1550 to 1850 masl. Angel Reyes, the owner of Agroloja, produces Caturra, Typica Mejorado, Sidra and Geisha varieties on his 28 hectare farm, which 50% is dedicated to growing coffee. The entire crops are strategically distributed into nano-lots or micro-lots by variety or planting season to focus more on ensuring the maximum utilization of the soils and topography, to maintain a rotation of the cycle in which the different varieties ripen. Ecuador is infamous for immense biodiversity and Angel Reyes has maintained this throughout Finca Agroloja. An agronomist by profession, Angel Reyes comes from a coffee producers family with a long tradition and well known for producing high altitude, exquisite aroma and flavor.

With constant research and education going into process and agronomic practices, Angel believes he can continue to elevate the cup profile of his coffees and enhance the flavor profile of his coffee to be unique and rich. All the time he is pushing boundaries in terms of fermentation to bring up new flavors and find pathways into further international markets. After harvesting the fermentation process begins immediately. This particular microlot “BRILIANTE” is a whole cherry fermentation for 72 hours in sealed tanks, then the coffee cherries are pulped mechanically in thin layers and then dried on raised beds. The drying time is about 25 days in raised beds in the sun.
