Coffea Diversa

/Behind the story/

Tucked away in Southern Costa Rica exists a unique coffee garden, Coffeea Diversa. Located in the micro region of Biolley and owned by Gonzalo Hernandez who grows upwards of 700 rare and exotic specimens of coffee varietals on his farm, from which 18 are officially sold, such as Geisha, Laurina, Mokka, Sudan Rume, Typica and the rest are in the process of approval under evaluation or just similar to other coffee varieties. This unique garden of various coffee varieties in one estate allows the character of the varietal itself to show more complexity, with this kind of approach there are endless possibilities for creating unique taste profiles. Coffea Diversa has one of the largest private collections of coffee botanical varieties in the world which are produced in very small and limited quantities.

/Low caffeine content/

Coffea Laurina is such an exceptional variety because it is a naturally occurring low-caffeinated coffee and growing it is famously difficult. Its lack of caffeine - a natural pesticide for coffee plants - makes Laurina more susceptible to insect damage. This lack of defense made this a very fragile coffee plant and it was on the brink of extinction until recent years. Laurina, or nickname “ Bourbon Pointu” is a rare varietal originally from the Reunion Islands of Bourbon, the coffee tree has a sharp shape like a Christmas tree with pointy beans or oval in shapes. For this honey process the coffee is mechanically pulped, all the mucilage is left in the parchment and then the beans are dried in african beds for 14 to 30 days.
